Frequently Asked Questions about my Zumba Classes...

What is Zumba? Zumba is a Latin dance cardio fitness class. It combines sassy moves with sizzling music and the whole class is just a lot of fun.

I don't dance. Can I still try Zumba? YES! What most people don't realize is that no one is watching them because everyone is concerned about their own moves. Zumba is not about doing the moves correctly, it's about moving, getting a work out and having a good time. I love it when I see people doing their own choreography in my class. It makes me smile. Most of my students are not "dancers" just women who like to mix up their workout and have a good time.

I am really out of shape, can I still try your class? I have women of all different fitness levels, shapes and sizes in my class. The great thing about Zumba is that it is incredibly easy to modify, so if you need to take things down, you can! I have had women in my classes who haven't worked out in years and women who work out daily, and they enjoy it just the same. This is a great way to get back into fitness because it doesn't feel like working out.

I have an injury, it is still possible to do Zumba? You have to listen to your body, but I have women in my class who have weak knees, bruised ribs, hurt ankles or vertigo and they all still do well and have a great time. As long as you are careful and listen to your own body, you can definitely do Zumba.

I have taken Zumba before, will your class be the same? No. Every Zumba instructor is completely different. Some of the moves might be the same, but we all use our own choice of music and choreography and the intensity level can vary greatly in Zumba classes. Come with an open mind and you will have a great time.

How long will it take to feel comfortable in class? The first class is always a bit overwhelming because everything is new, but by the 3rd or 4th class you will feel very comfortable and be getting a great workout. I change songs in and out so there is usually something fresh, but I don't change things all at the same time. Once you learn a song, we will dance it for awhile. Also, if you have taken other Zumba classes or know any Latin steps, we use those or a variation of them over and over. Once you know a little Zumba, things get much easier.

Will I get a good workout? YES! I know some Zumba classes are a little slower paced, but mine is not. I have 4 kids, so I have to maximize my workout time. So, if you are willing to keep the intensity up with me, you will be very sweaty by the end of class...even if you workout on a regular basis. Plan on a shower ;). On the other hand, you can keep it as low impact as you like. The choice is yours.

Is Zumba interval training? Yes. One reason I love Zumba is because it takes your heart-rate up and down so you can really push yourself without feeling exhausted. It also allows those who are new to fitness or who have asthma to manage their workout well. It's 56 minutes of cardio, with varying intensity and significantly more fun than a treadmill.

Will people be watching? I lower the blinds on the windows in the classroom so people can't just stand and watch class. This usually makes people more comfortable.

What ages is your class good for? I would say 13 and up. In one of my classes last year my 75 year old friend was the most consistent member of my class. Zumba is great for any age.

What do I wear? You can wear work out clothing or dance clothing. Zumba is bright, loud and fun, so wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Most of the women in my class wear work out clothes. Make sure you have good shoes, a water bottle (you will need it) and possibly a towel.

Can men take Zumba? Of course! At the place I used to teach, a man was there every week on the front row. He did a great job at modifying the more feminine moves. I have not had a man consistently in my classes at the Saline Rec, but they are welcome there.

If I like it, how much are classes? $33 for 6 classes if you are member or $44 for 6 classes if you are not a member. Please know that there is NO PRESSURE to sign up for classes if you attend the free ones...it really is just a chance for you to try it out.

If you have other questions, please let me know. I would love to have you join us for the free week of Zumba... and invite your friends!

  2. I agree with Jen! It would be fun to take from you! A good friend in DC taught, but we moved too soon for me to try her class. This reminds me I need to look for a class here!
